As one USFHP member discovered when he faced a serious health incident, we often come to realize the importance of our health care choices at the times when we need care most.
When Master Sgt. Gregory Moore retired after 20 years of service in the U.S. Air Force, like many veterans, he discovered a world of new decisions he would now be making for himself and his family — including the choice of health care.
A former Healthcare Administrator, Moore knows what makes good health care and what it takes to deliver it. As a military retiree, Moore could choose between various plan options offered by TRICARE, the Department of Defense health care program, or US Family Health Plan.
While Moore has many reasons that he is grateful for his decision to choose Johns Hopkins US Family Health Plan, one factor above all sold him: Johns Hopkins.
“When I saw that [USFHP] was offered for this region, and it was Johns Hopkins,” explains Moore, “then, of course, I jumped on it, because I know Johns Hopkins is a premier health institution and health system.”
One experience in particular proved just how consequential that decision would be. Moore was having trouble with his vision and called his Johns Hopkins optometrist. Having explained his issue, she advised that he come in immediately for an exam.
Upon examination, his eye doctor explained to Moore that he had a partially detached retina and would need prompt surgery. Right then and there, while he was in her office, his optometrist called the surgical facility to make the arrangements.
“They saw me the very next day,” recalls Moore, “and it was a Saturday!”
Moore met with the head of retina surgery at The Wilmer Eye Institute, who reassured him, scheduled his procedure for early Monday morning and encouraged him to call if there are any changes to his vision.
“He made me feel comfortable, even though I was a little nervous,” Moore continues. “To this day, I’m able to see out of that eye. They saved my eyesight.”
Now in his mid-60s, Moore has a special appreciation for his primary care doctor, Dr. Rosenman, who he sees every three months. At just a 15-minute drive from his home in Damascus, Maryland, Moore says his doctor has been one the best things about joining USFHP and credits him for helping Moore to lose weight and control his blood sugar.
“He’s been seeing me ever since I’ve been in the plan,” Moore explains. “He knows me by name. He knows my health. He knows the different issues I’ve had. I feel very blessed.”
The consistent quality of care he receives from his doctor and specialists, combined with the convenience to communicate with them through MyChart, have not only meant better health for Moore, but also peace of mind.
“I can’t say enough about Johns Hopkins as a whole — how they work as an integrated team,” Moore says. “To me, it’s really seamless, and that’s what you’re looking for in a health plan.”
As he crosses the 65-year mark in his life, Moore is grateful for many things — his wife of nearly 30 years, his two adult sons, his vision, his health and his health care with USFHP.
