Diabetes: Hemoglobin A1c test

What is this test?

An A1C is a blood test that measures your average blood sugar level over the past 2 to 3 months. It may be done with a blood draw or finger prick. This test can help determine whether a person has diabetes or prediabetes, and it can show how well a person with diabetes is managing their blood sugar.

Who needs this test?

Most people with diabetes should have this test at least twice a year. You may need this test to check for prediabetes or diabetes.
