Diabetes: Hemoglobin A1c test

What is this test?

A1C is a blood test taken by a finger prick that measures your blood sugar levels over the last few months. This test is done to find out if a person has diabetes or prediabetes, or to see how well a person with diabetes is controlling their blood sugar.

Who needs this test?

Most people with diabetes should have this test at least twice a year. You may need this test to check for prediabetes or diabetes.
